8. Edgar the Peaceable

After several difficult reigns, Edgar oversees something of a golden age for the Anglo-Saxons and despite his nickname is also a rather colourful character to boot. In our longest podcast thus far we encounter our toughest decision yet when it comes to assessing whether or not Edgar the not-so-peaceable is worthy of the Rex Factor.

    Great episode for an excellent Saxon King. Ali, what were you thinking, Edgar most definitely has the Rex Factor! Apart from the whole rape and cruelty to animals thing, he seemed like a good guy. And what about the Naval fleet?

    One thing you didn’t mention was that he set the precedent for anointing wives as Queens, which I discovered through some extensive Wikipedia research. Poor Edgar, all his good work dismissed because he didn’t start a war.

    We’re up to Mary I, and so far this is the only one I believe you got wrong.

    Seriously - Kidnapping nuns, a safe kingdom (including metaphorically safe pregnant women with sacks of gold!), a serious navy (I believe this comes in handy in the future - a man ahead of his time?), a noteworthy approach to law and order… and a direct approach to resolving awkwardness at court. Just because the neighbours are too scared to invade, and the local troublemakers are so nervous that they take him on pleasure cruises, I don’t believe he should be penalised. Edgar did decidedly better than Edward I with the Scots for example. Mel Gibson notably was not giving Edward leisurely cruises around the local loch, nor was he politely declining hunting trips….

    He has a string of great achievements (particularly the nuns), and is clearly a man not short on the sort of character that would fill a volume or two. Being able to keep the world subdued WITHOUT a war (and only an occassional threat of a hunting trip) is cause alone to be nominated for the Rex Factor. He was robbed! …and you know how he would treat someone who committed such a crime…

    Hi V-Vin, excellent comment! You’re quite right, Edgar would almost certainly have led us out into a dark forest with dagger in hand. I’ll put all of this to Ali when we record the James I podcast and see what he makes of the Edward I comparison!
